Mistakes Made by Students

Einstein once said,
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”. Why then do you keep studying in ways that are ineffective? Why would you do things that lead to unnecessary pain and suffering?

Because if you’re anything like I was in high school, you probably don’t know any better. You may not have any study techniques at your disposal. You just pick up your book and maybe a highlighter and you read. And that’s about it.

This is the painful ‘I-never-learnt-how-to-learn’ way of studying. But you should know that there is a better way.

And before you start beating yourself up for not knowing how to study effectively, stop right there.

Here are the most common mistakes students make when it comes to their studies.

1. You procrastinate

We think that we can do our work later we are too lazy specially when it comes to studies ... We don't want to study we just hate it because we are not interested in studies we forced to study ..and the person who force us is our parents but they do it for our betterment. So we just procrastinate it start watching Netflix and then the problems hit and then we do our work at the last minute. When you leave your work until the last minute you don’t have much time to do a lot of reading. So you throw together a few ideas. The end result is like an undercooked soggy pizza. The ideas are half-baked. There’s a good chance your work contains errors.

Tommorrow never comes back once its gone its gone forever.

Hence it is important to ensure that you are organised, set aside all distractions and put your head down. Hopefully, once you he started you won’t want to stop.

2. Time management

Ensure you have enough time for everything, consider the time spent playing sports or working, and in between those, allow time to study and do your work. I was the biggest sucker for this, I found myself getting held up so many times with family commitments. Eventually, I made up a plan on when I was to study and when I had free time. It seems like a hassle, but it worked wonders.

3. Not planning

Similarly to time management, planning is very important. Plan when you’re going to study and when you’re not, which subjects you’re going to study when. Add everything to the planner. I did this, especially during exam period, and it did me a world of wonders. More importantly than making.

4. Not getting enough sleep

Generally we students keep on studying for long hours because we need to perform well. And so we are sleep deprived . But these doesn't work neurologically. Our brain uses sleep to form new connections and prioritise the most important information. Setting up a consistent bedtime routine is therefore of paramount importance to students, and it has even been shown that focusing on getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night during exams leads to better grades than revising late into the night.

You need to rest so that your brain can work well .
If you ask me i will suggest you to be like a panda sleep is a best meditation.

If you don't sleep for at least to 8 hrs, you wont be able to memorise or recall information as effectively, etc. Sleep is critical to the learning process.

5. Your mindset is fixed (and it sucks)

“I’m not a scientist ”, “I’m not a physics person” or “I just can’t do it”. Isn't this sound familiar? You give up so easily, you start ignoring question that you find difficult to solve.

Well, the only way you can get better at any of your subjects is through putting in the work. Students who understand this have a huge advantage over others. Hardwork is the key to success

6. Missing too many classes

You stayed up too late the night before and slept through your 9 am class … again. But it’s not a big deal because you read the textbook, right? Wrong! Poor attendance can have major consequences in college.

Imagine skipping class on a day when a professor introduces a new topic, announces a quiz during the next class or assigns groups for a project due the following week. It’s easy to fall behind. And missing more than a certain number of classes can mean an automatic fail for some courses.

7. Studying non-stop

It’s important to take breaks while you’re studying. During high school, I had this completely drilled into my mind. Taking breaks, even a little 5-minute one here and there, allows your brain to soak in more valuable information as it returns refreshed.

8. Not asking questions or engaging

Asking questions or engaging throughout class is important. How else are you going to clear up information that you aren’t sure about? Additionally, that’s what your teachers are there for. They are there to help you and ensure you are answering questions properly, and on the right track. I annoyed my teachers like crazy all the time, getting assistance when I needed it. Alas, the teachers were happy, and my results greatly improved.

9. Only re-reading their notes for revision

Only re-reading notes is such a poor technique because students end up skim reading the text, meaning that they fail to actually process or consider the content. This means it doesn’t end up in their long-term memory.

A much more effective strategy would be to use retrieval practice, also known as the Testing Effect. This consists in students generating answers to question, in order to train their ability to recall the material. You can find out more about retrieval practice here.

10. Revising to Music

Many students mistakenly believe that listening to their favourite songs helps them revise, simply because it can enhance their motivation and improve their mood. However, recent research found that students who revised in a quiet environment performed over 50% better in an exam than those who revised listening to music with lyrics.

11. Trying to complete homework in sight of their phone

Multi-tasking is a myth. Many students believe that they can efficiently focus on several things at once, such that they can complete their homework, whilst also using their mobile phone. However, multi-tasking is impossible and causes students to make errors, as well as reducing their productivity: it simply wastes their time and energy switching from one task to another.

12. Taking notes in class verbatim

In lessons, students often get into the habit of taking down word for word what their teacher says. However, this technique is ineffective: doing so leads to shallower learning. By being selective and writing notes in their own words, they spend more time processing the information and embedding it in their brain.

Encouraging students not to take notes on a laptop but instead use pen and paper is one way to decrease verbatim note taking. To make this task less daunting and more effective, you could even teach students how to use the Cornell Note Taking Method…

13. Taking photos of lecture slides

Students often take pictures of lectures slides. However,  these trick brings negative impact on memory, as they are not meaningfully interacting with the material. Instead, to enhance their chances of remembering the lesson’s content, students should annotate copies of the lecture slides as they go along.

Sometimes small mistake can also cause a big trouble. So it's better not to regret in future if your are making any mistake out of these then you have a time you can correct it now make a change in yourself .
